This year, for the first time, we have the opportunity to direct our tree donations to a specific project. Through the Arbor Day Foundation, our trees will be planted in Northern Michigan as part of the Michigan State Forest and Good Neighbor Authority Reforestation project.
Eenhoorn has partnered with The Arbor Day Foundation to help plant five trees for every approved apartment application. Since our partnership began in 2021, our donations have made it possible to plant 30,000 trees nationally. By utilizing local planting partners, The Arbor Day Foundation is able to make a greater impact in more protected areas and communities.
A ribbon cutting took place Tuesday, Dec. 9, to commemorate the grand opening of Carlton Lofts, a new housing and social services hub in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This groundbreaking initiative to address the needs of the unhoused represents the collaboration of property management and investment firm Eenhoorn LLC and Community Rebuilders. The development is located at 1450 E Fulton Street, location of the former Van Andel Pavilion at Fulton Manor, which has been transformed by Eenhoorn into a supportive living environment, and will welcome its first residents in January 2025.
Now in its fourth successful year, the Eenhoorn community garden program continues to thrive, offering residents a unique opportunity to connect with nature and their neighbors.
Each year, the Eenhoorn team participates in community outreach events for National Outreach week. Though we are spread across the United States and the Netherlands, we all come together to give back in a tangible way.
Residents have already seen a decrease in overall monthly expenditures from 2022 to 2023 since the “go live” date in October 2023. The expenses are anticipated to continue to decrease as these systems run fully through a year cycle. The mini-split systems overall have saved approximately 88,427kwh of electric consumption year over year property-wide!
At Eenhoorn, we are continually exploring ways to incorporate sustainable practices to align with our Sustainability Initiative. Incorporating sustainability into our everyday operations is a primary focus. Below are a few updates from these past few months.
We seek to achieve efficiency through a whole-building systems approach. HVAC upgrades and building envelope sealing are some of the ways we ensure that heating and cooling is working as efficiently as possible.
With summer in the near future, our residents are gearing up for a season of fresh air, growing food, and getting to know their neighbors. The 2020 growing season pilot project at Windridge Apartments and Westminster Meadows Senior Living demonstrated that residents of all ages enjoy the many benefits of gardening such as nutrient dense food, learning new cooking skills, spending times outdoors, and physical exercise.
